Kaufman, Texas –Mr. Keith Bernard Offord, age 21, of Crandall was arrested and charged with burglary of a vehicle late Sunday night. Mr. Offord was placed in custody without incident and had begun transport to the Kaufman County Law Enforcement Center. After advising the suspect that he was indeed going to jail, Mr. Offord suddenly unlocked the door as well as his seat belt. Despite the efforts of the arresting deputy, to stop the vehicle and hang on to Mr. Offord in his attempt to jump from the moving vehicle, Mr. Offord jumped from the front seat of the K-9 unit, all the while handcuffed,onto highway 175, just north of the Kaufman County Law Enforcement Center.
Mr. Offord was transported to a Dallas hospital for medical treatment, and is expected to be release with only minor injuries. Mr. Offord will be charged with not only burglary of a vehicle, but with escape as well.
The charge of burglary of a vehicle is considered a Class A Misamenaor, and the escape charge is a third degree felony and carries a fine of up to $10,000.00 and two to ten years in prison.
