Kemp, Texas,- On January 7, 2012 at approximately 12:25 p.m., property owners checking their property located in the 16000 block of County Road 4052 near Kemp, were surprised to find three unknown suspects on their property. The property owner’s family dog became upset and alerted the owners that something was not right. Just about that time one of the property owners caught sight of the suspects running. The property owners placed a quick call to the Sheriffs Office.
Just inside the front gate of the property, deputies located a barrel in which the suspects had been collecting the copper, brass and other objects taken from the property.
A Texas Game Warden in the nearby area spotted one of the suspects running in a field on County Road 4052, and quickly apprehended him without incident. Kaufman County Sheriff deputies, along with a Kemp Police officer were able to locate the remaining two suspects hiding in an out building at a residence located in the 15000 block of County Road 4052.
Arrested and charged with Theft of Copper, and two counts of criminal trespass were Richard Mark Steakley, 34, of Trinidad, and Jesse Garner, 31, of Gun Barrel City. Steakley was released on a $16,000 bond, and Garner was released on an $8,500 bond. Tommy Wayne Jackson, 34, of Tool was charged with theft of copper and criminal trespass and remains in the Kaufman County Law Enforcement Center with bond set at $30,000.00.
